Steynol Grave Relocation Project Nearing End

The Ukufisa Colliery grave relocation in Springs, Gauteng Province has smoothly moved through the public participation, permitting and finally the exhumation phase of the grave relocation process. Eventually 42 graves were exhumed from a formal cemetery in the Springs area under a permit issued by the South African Heritage Resources Agency. The graves were identified through stone cairns to indicate them on the surface as well as aged sisal growths. The cemetery was possibly part of the nearby mining village and probably dates from around 80 years ago. Although very little human remains could be identified, several burial objects and burial positions were identified during the grave relocation process.
